Hey Everyone!

Cindy here! In the first episode of The Chosen, which we will be planning to watch on Friday evening, a good amount of the focus is on Mary Magdalene & her first encounter with Jesus. We are also introduced to Nicodemus, Matthew, Andrew & Simon Peter. We’re hoping to be able to talk a bit about what we watched. Things you can (but don’t need to) think about while watching:

Who is a memorable character for you from episode 1? (after Jesus)

Do Andrew & Simon seem like typical brothers to you?

If so, in what ways?

Can you relate to either/both of them?

Who are you more like, Andrew or Simon?

What about your brother/sister? More like Andrew or more like Simon?

What came to your mind watching the Matthew scenes?

How did you feel watching others interact with Matthew?

Have you ever heard of people talking about deliverance?

Can you think of a time in your life when you could tell that Jesus really cared about you & your situation?

Here are two bits of scripture you can look up if you want. They are Bible passages that tie in with episode 1’s scenes about Mary.

Luke 8:1-3 – Mary of Magdala

Isaiah 43:1-4 – I have redeemed you

But now, God’s message,

the God who made you in the first place, Jacob,

the One who got you started, Israel:

Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you.

I’ve called your name. You’re mine.

When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you.

When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.

When you’re between a rock & a hard place, it won’t be a dead end

– because I am God, your personal God, the Holy of Israel, your Saviour.

I paid a huge price for you:

all of Egypt, with rich Cush & Seba thrown in!

That’s how much you mean to me!

That’s how much I love you!

Isaiah 43:1 is spoken in the first scene of episode 1 & several times after. I’ve given you the Message version of verses 1-4. I discovered this version of these verses a few years ago & it just captured me! So I’m sharing it with you. But I also encourage you to read this part of scripture from your own Bible to get a most likely less paraphrased version.

Here’s a song I’ve been listening to a lot lately which reminds me of The Chosen’s take on Mary being delivered by Jesus.

Indescribable– Hillsong Y&F

You’re indescribable in every way

You searched me out

& now i’m caught up in Your grace

i heard my name across the ocean (think Is. 43:1!)

You pulled me closer

the current changed (The Chosen’s “against the current” logo!)

You showed me Life

a new horizon

a silver lining

a brand new day

You give me freedom that leaves me breathless

my glimpse of heaven is life with You

now there’s no fighting this gracious rhythm

i lift my hands high in praise to You

Perfect Love took my place

only Jesus

only Grace

what compares?

what comes close?

where You call me i will go
